Effective training due to instability

Sandbags are instable weights that are filled with a freely moving load. When it comes to strength training, many athletes simply stack on heavier and heavier loads. Studies have shown, however, that the instability of a training weight and one’s own position is more important in regards to muscle stimulation than the weight itself. An instable weight creates more neuromuscular impulses and promotes more muscular adaptation than increasing the weight. Turns out, less really is more at times.

Training with sandbags has a very good transfer to other sports and daily physical situations. Often times, you have to create power in situations where you have no perfect footing, outside influences impact your body or the object that you have to move doesn’t have an evenly distributed weight. Every repetition with the sandbag activates your muscles slightly differently. The high coordinative demands in sandbag training challenge your core muscles and teach you to generate enough power and body tension in every situation. This makes sandbags the embodiment of functional training.

There are different versions of sandbags. Common sandbag models sometimes let you change the training weight and ideally offer different handles. The so-called bulgarian bags have special handles that make them perfect for swing exercises but they won’t let you change the training weight. The blackPack sandbags combine both sandbag versions in one tool. The Loading-Bags let you choose and change the training weight freely, even during your workouts. The different handles allow for a versatile training in which you can vary the same exercise with different grips. The special baton handles are perfect for swing exercises and train your grip strength.

With water filling

A key feature of the blackPack sandbags is the fact that you can fill every model with water, too. The Loading-Bag AQUA turns your sandbag into an aquabag and training will become even more intense. The water never stands still and you need a great amount of strength and coordination to stabilize the blackPack. Especially your core strength is challenged and the interplay of the involved muscle groups is greatly improved. By the way, you don’t need a pump for the Loading-Bag AQUA. Wherever you have access to water you can fill the blackPack without any accessories.

Various possibilities

The different handles allow for a multitude of single and double-handed exercises. Additionally, the baton handles can be connected to our aeroSling suspension trainers. You can also simply hold the blackPack by its shell. This trains your grip strength and gives you even more exercises.

Increase your bodyweight

Weight vests are an effective tool to make bodyweight training more challenging. The vests increase your bodyweight and, thus, the training resistance in exercises like squats, dips, and pull-ups.

Quick weight adjustment

Often times, weight vests come with fixed weight bags that can only be accessed from the inside. The blackPack VEST does it differently. For one thing, the 6 weight bags can be filled freely. With sand you can reach a total weight of up to 10 kg (22 lb), with steel shots you can even go as high as 25 kg (55 lb). And for another thing, you can remove the weight bags from the outside when you don’t need the same weight for a different exercise. You don’t have to take off the vest to change the weight. Thus, you have 6 weight vests in one.

Easy to clean

The side parts of the blackPack VEST are open to allow for good air circulation. The inner surface is made from PVC and can be cleaned easily with a wet cloth. This prevents the typical odour development of other weight vests.

FAQ – frequently asked questions

How do I fill the blackPack?

The blackPack is filled indirectly, i.e. you fill the included Loading-Bags and put them inside the blackPack. You can also fill the blackPack directly, of course, or use other materials (plastic bottles, rubble without sharp edges, steel shots) which is a great option when you are on the road. How you put the Loading-Bags into the blackPack can be seen in this video.

What do I fill the blackPack with?

As mentioned before, the blackPacks are loaded with Loading-Bags. There are two different versions of the Loading-Bag, the Loading-Bag SAND and the Loading-Bag AQUA. The former can be filled with sand or similar material, the latter is designed for water only. You can also fill the blackPack directly without using a Loading-Bag.

Do I need different blackPacks for different Loading-Bags?

No. Whether you put one Loading-Bag AQUA or up to three Loading-Bags SAND (depending on the size of the blackPack version) into your blackPack makes no difference to the blackPack. For your training, however, it will make a huge difference. For the blackPack ESY S and M you have to use the respective Loading-Bag AQUA size.

How do I adjust the blackPack PRO?

The blackPack PRO is adjusted with three straps on the top. Simply tighten or loosen them to adjust the volume (and, thus, the instability) to your liking and your training needs.

What handle variations are there?

All blackPacks offer several handle variations. All sizes have two parallel handles, two baton handles, and two handles on the sides. Due to their smaller size, the blackPack ESY S and M have one central horizontal handle while the blackPack ESY L and PRO have two horizontal handles. The blackPack PRO is the only blackPack that also has two carrying handles on the top.

What is the maximum load of the blackPack?

The maximum load of the blackPack is directly proportional to its size. The blackPack ESY S, for example, can be filled with up to 10 kg (22 lb), the bigger sizes are tiered in 10 kg steps:

  • blackPack ESY S: 10 kg / 22 lb
  • blackPack ESY M: 20 kg / 44 lb
  • blackPack ESY L: 30 kg / 66 lb
  • blackPack PRO: 40 kg / 88 lb

You can also use Steel Shots to keep the volume to a minimum. The maximum weights, however, should not be exceeded. When using the Loading-Bag AQUA we also recommend not to exceed the given weights. Here, you also have to take into account that the mixture of air and water can increase the volume in a way that it only allows lighter training weights. The higher instability in return makes up for the lighter training weight.

How do I connect the blackPack with the aeroSling suspension trainer?

Every blackPack version has two baton handles on the sides with one connector loop on each end. This can be used to connect with the grip carabiner of the aeroSling ELITE suspension trainer.

Can I connect the blackPack with other equipment?

The blackPack PRO is well suited as pulling/dragging weight. Thus, it can also be used in connection with a Battle Rope to be pulled over greater distances.
